The aptly named Garden Route is one of the most stunningly beautiful tours available in South Africa and includes beautiful forests, freshwater lakes, wetlands, fabulous white sand beaches, tranquil lagoons and hidden coves. This superb tour also takes in Cape Town, one of the worlds most beautiful cities, and a magnificent private game reserve. 

This spectacualr 13 day tour encompasses some of South Africa's finest Southern coast. We are also able to offer this tour as a 10 day option, please enquire for further information.

Day 1:

Transfer from Cape Town airport to 4 star hotel next to V&A Waterfront area. Rest of day at leisure. 4 nights on a B&B basis.

Day 2:(The next couple of days are inter-changeable and are run according to the weather)

Visit to Table Mountain, taking the cable car to the top, (tickets included & weather permitting), where there are stunning 360degree views across Table Bay, the Cape Flats and back across the chain of mountains making up Table Mountain. We then descend and drive through city, pointing sites of historical and architectural significance. We then continue to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, which are famous for winning flower shows around the world. Lunch for own account can be enjoyed there.

Later we head down to Hout Bay for an optional boat trip to view Cape Fur seals on Duiker Island. (Guest will be lifted chair and all onto boat –Not suitable for electric wheelchairs.  We return to the hotel around 16/17h00. Evening at leisure.

Day 3:

Visit to the Cape of Good Hope Reserve down the Peninsula, stopping at the Penguin colony in False Bay and also at Cape Point in the reserve, where we take a funicular ride to the Old Lighthouse. We return via the famous Chapman's Peak Drive, if it is open. We then will ride this breathtaking road from Hout Bay, if closed we head over the equally stunning Old Cape road, the old wagon trail with views across the Cape Flats. Lunch for own account en-route. We return to the hotel between 17/18h00.  Evening at leisure. .B 

Day 4:

A visit to the winelands area of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. Stellenbosch being the second area to be established after Cape Town back in 1679. It has saved most of its original architecture. We stop for  wine tastings in each town/village, We can drop one wine tasting and visit the Period House museum with antiques of each period and style of house.  Lunch for own account en-route. We arrive back at the hotel between 17h00 -30. Evening at leisure. B

Day 5:

Depart for the Garden Route.  We drive via the Breede River Valley, where we stop for wine tasting en-route, lunch for own account in area. We drive via the Kogman'skloof Pass into the Klein Karoo, through more magnificent passes in this fertile valley. We overnight at a Guest House in Calitzdorp on a HB basis.

Day 6:

We depart for Oudtshoorn for the day, where we visit the Wildlife Ranch, where we see The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. We have lunch and a tour at an Ostrich farm and find out more about these fascinating flightless birds. Later in the afternoon we drive over the Outeniqua Pass to the coastal area of the Garden route.  We continue to Knysna for overnight for 2 nights on B&B basis.

Day 7:

We head out to Plettenberg Bay to the Keurbooms river to take an Eco-cruise on this beautiful gorged estuary. In summer there is an option to have a quick swim in this “black water river system”.  In the afternoon we have a very memorable afternoon planned - feed the gentle giants of Africa!!. Optional lunch for own account can be bought on area. Or a cruise on the Knysna Lagoon (guests have found this one to be a bit boring, but warmer in colder weather!).

Day 8:

Today we head to the Eastern Cape, to the 5 star private reserve, which is the best and largest private reserve in South Africa. We overnight on a FB basis for 2 nights including, all meals, drinks and game drives.

Day 9:

On reserves daily programme. Open vehicle game drives in morning and afternoon.

Day 10:

We head back down the Garden route to the same hotel in Knysna as before for 1 night on B&B basis. Stopping at another endangered animal rescue and rehab centre, Tenikwa. Lunch en-route for own account.

Day 11:

We drive to Mossel Bay, where the first Portuguese Navigator Dias landed in 1488. Here we collect a specialist guide and do Meet the People tour.Meet the people tour - alternative to a standard Township tour. Here we meet locals of all walks of life. In the Late afternoon we depart for our Farm experience. We overnight on a Guest Farm in the Heidelberg district on a HB basis. Lunch on tour for own account.

Day 12:

After our farm tour, if farmer not harvesting, we continue through the old town of Swellendam with its wonderful history and architecture. Stop for a Berry Liquor tasting in area. Lunch en-route for own account. Return to Cape Town over Sir Lowry's pass, returning to same option hotel for one night on B&B basis. Evening at leisure to explore V&A waterfront.

Day 13:

Check out of hotel. Free time in the morning to explore, depending on time of return flight.  You will be collected for airport transfer, 4 hours prior to flight departure.

 

Terrain

To ensure an excellent high standard of service you will be personally escorted on your tour by the tour organisers who will help you experience a real mini adventure in the wild. Each of the properties included in this tour have a few wheelchair friendly rooms. These facilities vary from place to place, some are more accessible than others. Wheelchair adapted vehicles are provided in Cape Town and standard vehicles are used in Port Elizabeth and at the Game Reserve.

 

Equipment

Accommodations vary in the facilities they are able to offer. Some of the facilities include wider doors, spacious bathrooms, lowered light switches and mirrors, roll-in showers with fold down seats, grab rails, enough space next to the WC to park the wheelchair. Services of a registered Professional Practitioner Nurse can be arranged for minor medical procedures. Hire of medical equipment, including manual wheelchairs and oxygen therapy must be arranged at time of booking with our Travel Advisors.
