Cruise News - our trip on Norwegian Getaway!

Last month Frankie & I were delighted, to receive an invitation to spend a night on board Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Norwegian Getawayat an inaugural event in Southampton. Better still, we were able to extend that invitation and 46 excited Accessible Travel & Leisure customers & 20 wheelchair users, accompanied us.

It was great to meet up with everyone onboard and discuss our findings of the ship. Overall impressions were very favourable, with just one niggle - the raised bed was too high for some to manage. Otherwise, Norwegian had ticked all the boxes – with extra-wide doors for easy access, tilting mirrors and adjustable hanging-rods in wardrobes. Bathrooms met with approval, too, with grab rails, lower sinks and toilets and shower seats. As well, there were accessible toilets in various public areas and wheelchair positions in the Getaway Theatre.

Everyone was every bit as impressed with the number of ways there were to enjoy your days on-board – from a fun-filled aqua park, a sports complex and a spa, to entertainments which ranged from dance spectaculars, a casino and a comedy club, to duelling pianos and a magic-and-mystery dinner show. There are also over 20 bars and lounges; and as for dining, there are even more venues to choose from, including 24-hour room service. As you can imagine, with just one night on board, our biggest problem was deciding where to eat!

We were also really pleased to meet Carrie-Ann Lightley on-board. Carrie-Ann is a wheelchair user and advises both VisitBritain and Tourism for All on accessibility. Like many people she hadn't cruise before but was impressed by the ease of access and facilities provided. To read more of her experiences check out her blog here.
