Think of the most idyllic palm-fringed beach with crystal seas and powder white sand and you're probably imagining Barbados. One of the most exotic holiday destinations, Barbados is a beach-lover's paradise. Here you cannot fail to relax and just soak up the friendly, laid-back atmosphere with its year-round sunshine and gently soothing sea breezes.
The island's magnificent beaches and sandstone cliffs overlook fabulous lagoons and magical coral reefs. Watersports of all kinds are understandably popular, with the chance of real adventure on deep sea fishing trips. Most resorts provide snorkelling equipment and boats for hire.
The pace on the island is undeniably given over to enjoying lazy days in the sun, but service is always attentive and the warmth of Barbadian hospitality is legendary. However, after watching yet another spectacular sunset, you'll find the island comes alive at night. There's a whole host of restaurants, clubs and bars resounding to the happy rhythm of Caribbean music. Local cuisine is spicy and delicious, but you'll also be tempted by a wonderful range of exotic seafood specialities and international delicacies. Large scale BBQs are popular and most hotels offer this as a dining option.
Known as the 'Little England' of the Caribbean, you'll feel at home with the way English customs have been adopted. Cricket is played everywhere, including on the beaches and don't be surprised to see portraits of the Queen hanging from walls. The capital, Bridgetown, is great for shopping and there are many splendid colonial buildings and plantations to visit. Access around the main resorts is good, with hotels well equipped to provide the facilities you may need. |
